New consultation on Manual of Conduct and Procedures

Dear UMASA members,

As promised during the Annual General Meeting held on 28th June 2023, UMASA is holding a new consultation on the amended Manual of Conduct Procedures and the Evaluation and Assessment Criteria, that were not accepted by the majority at the meeting. You can now view these amended documents in the section ‘Collective Agreements’ within the member area of the UMASA website.

A number of academic staff in the grades of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, and who have reached statutory retirement age, were waiting for the outcome of the AGM vote, since this could have given them the opportunity for an extension to 67 or 70 years of age.

As discussed during the AGM, Professor Dominic Fenech proposed to Council to allow these individuals to continue working, however while a discussion was held the motion was not allowed to proceed to a vote.

Consequently, those Lecturers/Senior Lecturers/Associate Professors who have reached 65 or 67 years of age will not benefit from the proposed extensions and will now be obliged to retire in September.

UMASA intends to resume negotiations with University management on the revised Manual as soon as possible.

Please give us your views on the current draft, and let us know if you have any suggested changes or additions on the attached documents by 10th September 2023, by writing to info@umasa.org.mt.

Regards,
UMASA Council

Your UMASA Faculty Contacts

In order to ensure that there is a greater facility in the contact between UMASA council members and the members of academic staff across the University UMASA co-opts a number of its members to serve as ‘contact points’. Given the diversity of needs that are found across the university the contact points are chosen to represent the diversity, disciplinary and otherwise, of UMASA’s membership. Feel free to get in touch with your Faculty Contact Points if there are any issues or queries you would like to bring to the attention of UMASA.
